For generations, cultural traditions have helped connect families, celebrate heritage, and give young people a deeper sense of who they are. At Arrey Elementary School, folklórico dance has become one of those cherished traditions, bringing students, families, and the community together through music, movement, and cultural pride.
For more than 20 years, the Arrey community has supported students as they learn and perform traditional folklórico dances. Beginning each January, teacher Mrs. Oralia Piper dedicates countless hours to teaching students from kindergarten through fifth grade, practicing two to three dances each week. Through this experience, students develop confidence, discipline, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation for their culture. The students have had the opportunity to share their talent and represent their community at events including the Truth or Consequences Fiesta and the National Migrant Conference in Albuquerque. These performances give students the opportunity to celebrate their heritage while proudly sharing their culture with audiences beyond their school community.
Arrey Elementary School also holds a special place in the history of the Covarrubias family. For four generations, the school has been part of the family’s story. Jose and Antonia Covarrubias were deeply proud and grateful for the educators who supported, inspired, and encouraged their nine children throughout their years at Arrey Elementary. Today, that legacy continues through their three granddaughters, who have become educators at Arrey Elementary themselves. By supporting and inspiring their own students, families, and the broader Arrey community, they are carrying forward a family tradition rooted in service, education, and a lasting commitment to their community.
Support from the Covarrubias-Aprendamos Foundation is helping Arrey Elementary continue this meaningful tradition by providing resources for essential folklórico attire, including dresses, white shirts, and other items needed for students to participate. Having access to these materials allows students to fully take part in performances and helps ensure that this tradition can continue for future generations. Preserving traditions like these reflects the Foundation’s broader commitment to creating opportunities that celebrate children as individuals and honor their gifts and talents. By investing in programs that connect students with their culture and community, partnerships like this help young people develop confidence while strengthening the traditions that bring generations together.
The Covarrubias-Aprendamos Foundation is proud to support Arrey Elementary School and the students who continue this longstanding tradition. By investing in our children and their culture, we are helping preserve traditions that connect generations while giving young people the confidence and opportunity to proudly share where they come from.
