While we want to make change happen on a grand scale, sometimes small acts of philanthropy can have a big impact on children and families in our community.
We were recently reminded of this when our partners at the Luminous Mind Foundation reached out to request sponsorship support for their clients. As an organization providing free, trauma-informed Home Visiting services to expectant parents and families with children ages zero to five, they had first-hand experience serving clients in some of the most economically disadvantaged parts of Doña Ana County. While serving clients, their team members noticed that many of the families enrolled in the program were navigating financial hardship, and access to essential items like diapers was proving to be a significant barrier to maintaining a healthy and safe environment for their children.
Their Co-Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Marcos Peña, took matters into his own hands and wrote a proposal that he submitted to the Covarrubias-Aprendamos Foundation, asking for $500 in sponsorship support to help address diaper insecurity. “The sponsorship allowed us to provide tangible support during home visits, which helped to reduce stress for caregivers and enable them to focus on their child’s development, bonding, and overall well-being. Additionally, it enhanced our ability to build trust with families, which is critical for sustained engagement in services such as developmental screenings, parenting education, and connection to community resources,” Dr. Peña shared.
One story in particular stands out to Dr. Peña. A family they were providing Home Visiting services to recently had a newborn baby and were experiencing significant financial strain. “The caregiver disclosed reusing diapers when supplies ran low, which posed health risks for the infant. With support from donations and sponsorships, we were able to provide consistent diaper supplies, education on infant care, and connections to additional services,” he said. He also noted that the family is now actively engaged in services and is showing positive indicators of improved health and stability. “These stories reflect the reality of many families we serve where small, consistent support can create life-changing outcomes.”
The team at the Luminous Mind Foundation remains committed to finding ways to bridge the gap and cultivate relationships that help create healthier communities. “Partnerships with foundations like the Covarrubias-Aprendamos Foundation are essential to our ability to go beyond core service delivery and truly meet families where they are. Without this support, many families would continue to face unmet basic needs that directly impact child health and development,” Dr. Peña said.
We are grateful for the Luminous Mind Foundation and all they do to promote early childhood development, strengthen parent-child relationships, and connect families to essential resources such as healthcare, early intervention, and basic needs support. Thank you for making a vital impact for children and families in Southern New Mexico!
